Olveston CEVC Primary School
Curriculum
For the past 7 years we have developed a rich and exciting creative curriculum. In 2013, anticipating the changes to the Primary Curriculum set for September 2014, we explored ways to make the curriculum relevant, purposeful and resilient to further changes. We follow letters and sounds in phonics an use Jolly Phonics actions and songs to support teaching. Our reading books are from Pearson - Phonic Bug.

Pupil voice was taken to a new level as we embarked on our Rights Respecting Journey (http://www.unicef.org.uk/rrsa). The children were given greater influence on the content of their learning in the Foundation subjects to best reflect their knowledge and interests. ‘OUR’ (Olveston’s Unique Curriculum) curriculum was created!
The new version of Olveston’s curriculum rolls over 2 years and is delivered under the following themes: Year 1 – War and Peace, Conservation, Enterprise. Year 2: Faiths and Cultures, Explorers and
Innovation. Each theme will be developed to start with the child and then extend to local, national and global perspectives.
Each term the children will enjoy special ‘WOW’ events, trips, visitors, cross phase learning and lots of time outdoors. Under these ‘umbrella’ themes, we ensure that all children learn; reading, writing, maths, computing, science, history, geography, music, art, design technology, P.E., French and R.E. All areas of the curriculum are underpinned by learning skills including – curiosity, perseverance, enquiry, creativity, problem solving and questioning. The curriculum also includes lessons on: e-safety, relationships, personal/social/health education and citizenship and lots of outdoor learning! Teachers plan in Year phases: Years 1 and 2; 3 and 4; 5 and 6.
We combined the best elements of our previous curriculum with ideas from the children and incorporated the new statutory requirements. The result is a curriculum which is excites, engages and motivates everyone thus enabling every learner to enjoy and achieve.

"We enjoy MOJO active for PE,
it's always fun and active and it keeps
us healthy. We appreciate them coming
all that way to help us. "
Year 3
English, maths and computing are taught both discretely and also through the thematic teaching of other subjects; skills being taught in lessons and then developed and applied in other curriculum areas. French language is taught discretely in weekly sessions from Year 3 to Year 6 by one of our teachers who is a language graduate.
PE is taught by teachers who follow the Val Sabin scheme of work and by specialist coaches provided by Mojo Active www.mojoactive.co.uk. Years 2 - 6 each go to Tockington Manor School for swimming lessons (Monday afternoons for 6 consecutive weeks).
